Tartu Hydrogen Days 2025: Exploring Hydrogen's Role in Energy Security and National Defence

Mark your calendars for October 9–10, 2025, as the 9th Tartu Hydrogen Days unfold at Physicum and Chemicum in Tartu. This two-day knowledge-sharing event gathers scientists, entrepreneurs, and policymakers to dive into the transformative role of hydrogen in bolstering Estonia’s energy security and national defence. Organized as part of an ongoing commitment to advancing hydrogen technologies, this year’s event promises inspiring presentations, engaging discussions, and meaningful collaboration across sectors. Participants are required to register by October 3 to secure their spot.

Day One: The Business Impact of Hydrogen

Held on October 9 and hosted as Business Day, the event will kick off with welcoming remarks from Tartu’s Mayor, Urmas Klaas, followed by a day moderated by Karl Ander Kasuk. Industry leaders will unveil cutting-edge hydrogen solutions, share insights into strategic investments in the Nordic-Baltic region, and explore the integration of fuel cells within defence systems. Other key topics will include the role of data-driven technologies in hydrogen production and logistics, along with efforts to build sustainable infrastructure in ports.

The day culminates in a high-level panel discussion, “Hydrogen – a Key Technology for Estonia’s Energy Security and National Defence?”, moderated by Ove Oll, a research fellow in physical chemistry from the University of Tartu. Esteemed panellists such as Carmen Font, CEO of Font Corporation, Aivo Lokk, Head of Business Analysis at Utilitas Eesti, and Vijay Sirse, CEO of Destiny Energy Estonia OÜ, will engage in thought-provoking dialogue on the potential of hydrogen to fortify Estonia’s energy independence and its critical role in defence strategies.

Day Two: Hydrogen in Science and Innovation

The second day, October 10, shifts its focus to the academic and technical frontiers of hydrogen technologies. Science Day will begin with an opening speech by Mari Moora, Vice Rector for Research at the University of Tartu. Key discussions will revolve around hydrogen's ability to stabilize energy systems, the creation of innovative catalysts and storage materials, and the role of education in advancing hydrogen expertise within Estonia.

The event will close with a collaborative session titled “Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration of Hydrogen Organisations.” Moderated by Priit Ilomets, Head of the Hydrogen Technologies Division at AS Metrosert, the discussion will bring together diverse stakeholders to examine the development of a robust and sustainable hydrogen ecosystem. Highlighted speakers include Simo Säynenvirta, CEO of H2 Springboard, Ain Laidoja, Executive Director of the Estonian Hydrogen Technologies Association, and Sven Parkel, CEO of the Estonian Hydrogen Cluster.
