A Latvian hydrogen startup on a European stage
Latvian hydrogen technology developer ProtiumTech has been selected as one of the finalists in the VITO4STARTERS competition, taking place during the Love Tomorrow Summit in Boom, Belgium, on 23 July 2026.
The competition brings promising science-based startups onto the stage to present technologies supporting the sustainability transition. Organised within VITO’s programme at the summit, it places young companies directly in front of researchers, investors, corporate representatives and European innovation stakeholders.
For Latvia, ProtiumTech’s participation is more than another startup competition result. It is a clear indication that hydrogen technologies being developed locally are beginning to attract attention beyond the Baltic region.
Technology designed for flexible green hydrogen production
Established in Latvia in 2023, ProtiumTech is developing a membrane-free, decoupled water-electrolysis system for producing green hydrogen.
The company’s approach separates hydrogen and oxygen production through alternating electrochemical cycles. By removing the conventional membrane and separating gas generation in time and space, the technology is intended to simplify the electrolyser architecture and provide greater operational flexibility.
This is particularly relevant when hydrogen production is connected to variable renewable electricity. A more flexible electrolyser could adjust its operation according to renewable energy availability, electricity prices and hydrogen demand rather than relying on continuous operation under fixed conditions.
ProtiumTech is also working with a modular architecture intended to support future scaling from smaller systems towards larger industrial applications. Its target markets include renewable energy integration, industrial decarbonisation and emerging hydrogen infrastructure.
European recognition is beginning to compound
The VITO4STARTERS final is not an isolated international appearance for ProtiumTech.
The startup has previously participated in Plug and Play’s programme, received recognition at TechChill and joined Fundación Repsol’s Fondo de Emprendedores programme. It was also included among the Latvian deep-tech companies presented at the 2026 Hello Tomorrow Global Summit in Amsterdam.
Taken together, these milestones show how Latvian research-driven companies can enter European networks, engage with industrial partners and build credibility around technologies developed locally.
That visibility matters. Hydrogen hardware development requires substantial testing, patient capital, engineering partnerships and access to real industrial environments. International competitions and accelerator programmes cannot replace commercial deployment, but they can help startups reach the investors, customers and technology partners required to move forward.
Turning visibility into commercial deployment
The next milestone for Latvia’s hydrogen innovation ecosystem is to convert international attention into pilot installations, validated operating data, manufacturing partnerships and commercial orders.
ProtiumTech’s progress demonstrates that Latvia has the scientific and engineering capability to develop hydrogen technology, not only to discuss future hydrogen production or infrastructure. It also shows the value of connecting university research, startup entrepreneurship, industrial testing and international market access.
There is every reason to hope that this recognition will be followed by further hydrogen technology innovation and commercialisation in Latvia. More Latvian teams should have the opportunity to develop laboratory results into investable companies, test equipment under industrial conditions and enter European supply chains.
ProtiumTech’s place on the VITO4STARTERS stage is therefore a meaningful achievement for the company and a positive milestone for Latvia’s wider hydrogen technology community.
