Safety Matters: EHSP Webinar on Hydrogen Safety Plans, 21 October 2026

The European Hydrogen Safety Panel is hosting a free one-hour webinar on 21 October 2026 sharing lessons from its reviews of Hydrogen Safety Plans across Clean Hydrogen JU projects. Latvian hydrogen ecosystem stakeholders preparing or running EU-funded projects will find practical guidance on building and maintaining safety plans that work.

The European Hydrogen Safety Panel is running a one-hour webinar on 21 October 2026. It's called “Safety Matters: Lessons and Guidance for Clean Hydrogen JU Projects”, and for once the title is accurate. The panel has spent years reviewing Hydrogen Safety Plans from funded projects. This is where they say what they found.

What the webinar covers

It's aimed at project officers and safety managers working on Clean Hydrogen JU projects, though registration looks open to anyone with an interest. The organisers list four things on the agenda:

  • What recent EHSP reviews of Hydrogen Safety Plans turned up, and where plans most often fall short.

  • The EHSP Safety Planning and Management Guidance Document, and how to use it when you're writing, running, checking and updating a plan.

  • Why a Safety Plan has to keep changing through the life of a project.

  • What help the EHSP can give to Clean Hydrogen JU beneficiaries.

Then Q&A with the panel's experts. They also want to show how what one project learns about safety gets pooled and passed on to the rest of the sector.

Lessons learned as the starting point

This is the bit we'd sign up for. The EHSP was set up in 2017. Its guidance document on safety planning first came out in 2019 and has been revised more than once since. So when the panel talks about common weak spots in safety plans, that's pattern recognition from a lot of real project documents, across electrolysis, storage and mobility.

The panel also works with HIAD 2.0, the European database of hydrogen incidents and accidents. Somebody else's near-miss is a lot cheaper to learn from than your own.

Why this matters for Latvian hydrogen projects

Projects in Latvia and the wider Baltics are getting closer to steel in the ground. Ports, industrial sites, refuelling, electrolysers tied to the grid. At that stage the safety plan stops being an annex. The permitting office wants it. The insurer wants it. The lender's technical adviser wants it.

EHSP guidance is public and free. You don't need Clean Hydrogen JU money to use it. For a Latvian developer it's a ready reference written by people who have read a lot of safety plans, and that beats starting from a blank page.
